Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies has confirmed Max Verstappen asked to take a new power unit and start from the pit lane at the British Grand Prix. Verstappen's request came from the straight line speed deficit he carried against Isack Hadjar through qualifying, which left him starting seventh. Red Bull refused, unconvinced a pit lane start would produce a better result, and pointed to Verstappen running in contention for third from mid race and closing on Lewis Hamilton. Verstappen's answer to that, per the report: even if he had finished third, the podium would not have been deserved.
